Research interest
Clemence Vannier is a senior researcher at Manaaki
Whenua – Landcare Research specialised in geospatial modelling and land use
management issues. Her background is in geography and environment. Her
research focus on socio-ecosystems where she investigates environmental issues
related to landscape and management systems and develops options to protect the
environment and human well-being. The use of geospatial tools is central in her
research. She also develops quantitative and spatial models using GIS, geostatistics,
agent-based and systems dynamic modelling approaches.
She holds a PhD in remote sensing and modelling of agricultural practices in
the Brittany region (France). She taught geography at the University of Paris
Sorbonne, and completed postdoctoral fellowship on mapping and scenario
modelling of changes in land use and ecosystem services in the French Alps. She
has worked for the French space agency (CNES) to investigate the role of land
use and natural barriers in residential exposures to agricultural pesticides.
Based in New Zealand since 2016, she has worked at the GeoHealth Laboratory,
the Geography Department and the Civil and Natural Resources Engineering
department of the University of Canterbury and Manaaki Whenua – Landcare
Research to develop quantitative models, geospatial solutions and decision
support tools to help strengthen community well-being as well as well
agricultural sustainability, resilience and profitabily.
Recent projects
Her recent projects cover a range of topics:

- Researching landscape archetypes and climate change mitigation and adaptation for agricultural landscapes in New Zealand
- Future of New Zealand arable agriculture
- Developed informed strategies, assessment options, scenarios, pathways and interventions, for transforming and strengthening the agricultural sector over the next 5-30 years under Carbon neutral incentives.
- Decision Support Tool for land-use decisions (collaboration with the University of Canterbury)
- Modelling changes based on different land-use decision scenarios in New Zealand agricultural systems
- Arable and livestock sector submodel, working with stakeholders including Māori
