Diagnostic features
Unbranched filamentous charophyte with long cylindrical cells. A single ribbon-like green chloroplast, containing a row of circular pyrenoids, runs through the middle of the cell; this is often twisted so it can be seen in more than one plane. Purple cell sap may be present in some habitats.
