Diagnostic features

Filamentous chlorophyte, usually unbranched but may be sparsely branched (cf. its close relative Cladophora, which is many-branched). Cells are large, long and cylindrical, each with a single, netlike green chloroplast with several pyrenoids.

Typical habitats

Common in unshaded stony streams and rivers during summer low flows
