Diagnostic features

Branched filamentous chlorophyte with cells that widen towards the branching end. Some cells, particularly at the end of the filament bear a hair cell with a bulbous base. Pyrenoids are obvious in the net-like chloroplasts.  Cell division as in Oedogonium, in which some cells retain rings of scar tissue at one end.

Typical habitats

Found in clean water streams/rivers including lake outlet rivers; may grow epiphytically on vegetation in lakes.
