Diagnostic features
Valves identical, both possessing a raphe (i.e. the genus is biraphid). Frustules oval in valve view, less than 20µm in length (very small), although a range of lengths may occur. Central area "bow tie" shaped. Chloroplasts golden brown, parietal, lying against the edges of the valve. May be difficult to distinguish from Sellaphora.
