Te Rahi

  • He pepeke tino iti, he tinana mohe, he parirau kore, 1–3 mm te roa.

Size range

  • Tiny, soft–bodied wingless, 1–3 mm long.
  • New Zealand has two of largest known in world – giant 14 mm long

Te Tītaringa

  • Kei te ao whānui, he maha anō ngā momo māori.
  • Kitea nuitia ai i ngā oneone haukū, i ngā otaota rau, he wā anō kua noho tōpū mai ki te mata o ngā takotoranga wai iti.

Distribution

  • Worldwide, with many native species
  • Widespread in damp soil, common in leaf litter, sometimes massed on the surface of small pools of water

Life history

  • Feed on micro–organisms – fungi, algae, bacteria, lichens. Others eat dead or live plant material and pollen
  • Most have forked jumping tail enabling them to spring away from danger
