Gamete, Eco-tox and Molecular (GEM) laboratory
What is the GEM lab?
The GEM lab is a large research & development molecular laboratory, with a research focus on conservation and biodiversity.
It is also a PC2, Containment and Transitional facility, which means:
- PC2 - Physical containment level 2. There is an international scale called a physical containment (PC level) which determines the hazard levels of the organisms studied and the level of protection required. There are four levels of physical containment: PC1 is suitable for work with organisms where the hazard levels are low, and PC4 - is the highest level.
- Containment facility is designed and operated to prevent the release of the organism - or its heritable material - into the wider environment.
- Transitional facility - a facility, where these organisms can be held for an agreed time.
