The Karanga a Tāne Mahuta experience is a 2,000-year journey that immerses you in Aotearoa New Zealand’s ancient flora, fauna, and unique taonga (treasured) species in a blend of real and virtual space.
Embrace Māori origin myths, then see what the future could look like as imagined by the young people who helped develop a 2,000-year guardianship plan for Au Warawara.
Open your eyes to the world
The Karanga a Tāne Mahua story shows the impact of environmental change over time.
The VR experience takes a te ao Māori pūrākau (mythical) view of Aotearoa New Zealand before humans arrived, using Māori myths and legends, and imagery of a giant eagle, flora, and many extinct taonga.
Observe the arrival of humans and see significant changes to Aotearoa New Zealand’s environment, including the milling of kauri, and the decline in the health of the forests and many native species iconic to Māori.
And what of the future? Watch the environment change depending on the choices we make today, and the impact those decisions have.
