Where does it occur?

This shrubland was sampled on the South Island east coast near Timaru, Fairlie and Kaikoura. It is likely to be more widely distributed. All occurrences were located below 300 m.

Description

This alliance is consistently dominated by Cordyline australis, differentially occurring over a range of native woody shrubland species, such as Muehlenbeckia australis, M. complexa, Pteridium esculentum and Coprosma propinqua, and exotic grasses and herbs, such as Holcus lanatus, Dactylis glomerata and Trifolium repens. Species richness is very low (on average three species per plot) and on average only 6% is exotic.
